Thursday Evening Opening Reception

6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Sheraton Grand, Camellia/Gardenia Ballrooms

One of the exciting elements of this year’s conference is the opportunity to visit the center of our state government. Please join us on the first day of the conference for a welcoming reception.

Darrell Steinberg

Due to new responsibilities related to his upcoming selection as President Pro Tem of the California Senate, our invited guest, Sen. Darrell Steinberg has had to withdraw at the last minute from his speaking engagement at our opening reception, as he will no longer be in town. We regret that he won’t be joining us to speak and to meet our members.
Jeff Frost, CATESOL Legislative Advocate
However, we have a wonderful replacement: CATESOL’s legislative advocate, Jeff Frost, will speak about the politics of 2008, the budget shortfall that we are all facing, and the impacts on education generally and on ESL specifically. Jeff will focus on grass roots advocacy and the effect we can have on the future of education funding and legislative support for our interests. Saturday Evening Art Event

Unwind and join your creative colleagues Saturday evening for a stroll around Sacramento’s eclectic midtown art district. Cost: Free

6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. No-host Bar and Hors d’oeuvres Reception, Poolside at the Hyatt

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. "Second Saturday" Art Galleries Stroll

9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Dining at one of several area restaurants open late to Second Saturday attendees

We recommend making a reservation for dinner at a restaurant as soon as you can in April, as they fill quickly. Refer to the Restaurant Guide on the website at www.catesol2008.org.

April 12th is Second Saturday and Sacramento gallery owners open their doors to serve tastes and treats amid original art works by some of the region’s finest artists.

We’ll start the evening with a no-host bar and hors d’oeuvres around the Hyatt’s outdoor pool and patio at 6:00 p.m. While you’re sipping your favorite cocktail, you’ll receive a bag full of goodies including directions for the "Art Card" game, a strolling map, suggestions of interesting places to dine following the gallery walk, and arrangements for a group guide or transportation if desired.

It’s a lively scene with plenty of excitement and visual stimulation. Talk with local featured artists at several of the galleries. And, we’ll even make it rewarding – with a game of "Collect the Art Cards" that will reward lucky winners with a prize they can share with their classroom. This is an artsy, fun-filled experience that even local Sacramentans don’t want to miss!

Escorted Dinners

On Friday evening, groups of up to 10 individuals can be escorted by a local Sacramentan to one of six local restaurants. All restaurants are an easy walk from the conference sites and have entrees for under $20. Individuals are responsible for their own expenses. The escort will accompany the group from the hotel to the restaurant, coordinate settlement of the bill, and obtain receipts for those who need them. Please bring enough small bills to facilitate making change and agree beforehand whether to split the bill or itemize.

Sign up at the conference’s Hospitality Desk, located near Registration at the Convention Center. Departure time and place will be 6:00 p.m. from the area of the Hospitality Desk. Adjustments or additions may have to be made, depending on group size and availability of volunteer escorts, but below are the planned restaurants choices. If you are disabled and cannot walk the short distance to a restaurant, please inform Hospitality in advance so taxi arrangements can be made for you.

1) P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, 1530 J St. (0.30 miles away). Chinese classics with a contemporary tweak; dishes are artfully presented. Signature plates include diced chicken wrapped in cool lettuce leaves, orange-peel beef with chili peppers, and wok-fried scallops with lemon sauce.

2) Brew It Up Brewery & Grill, 801 14th St. (0.36 miles away). This popular local brewpub offers an upscale twist on pub fare. Buttery clams and mussels steamed with a sprig of thyme, brats and mash with stone-ground mustard and caramelized onions, and Creole-style Dungeness crab are some of the fresh offerings.

3) Mikuni Japanese Restaurant, 1530 J St. (0.30 miles away). Sacramento’s favorite Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. The main attraction here is sushi, from the extensive selection of nigiri and sashimi to the original specialty rolls. Other Japanese staples such as chicken teriyaki and tempura are also on the menu.

4) Esquire Grill, 1213 K St. (0.09 miles away). With its refined ambience, attentive service and top-notch menu, the Esquire Grill guarantees a quality meal in a designer atmosphere. The American-themed menu includes fish, poultry, pasta, steaks, salads, or sandwiches.

5) Ernesto’s Mexican Food, 1901 16th St. (0.64 miles away). The usual authentic Mexican fare – carnitas, burritos, fajitas, tacos – done with a healthy, refreshing flair. Wonderful service and a breezy, casual atmosphere combine for an enjoyable dining experience.

6) Mulvaney’s Building and Loan, 1215 19th St. (0.88 miles away). This quirky, charming restaurant offers California cuisine with an emphasis on local, fresh, seasonal ingredients.
